Quoting from December 2012 issue of Milenia Muslim magazine, Malaysians generate an average of 30,000 tons of organic waste per day, which consists of food waste and its peers.... Does this mean Malaysians indeed eat a lot and full of sustenance? Unfortunately we usually dumped our waste without thinking of the consequences.

I often segregate recyclable waste such as paper, plastic bottles, glass and plastic packaging in different plastic containers. When workers come to collect garbage, they would take the plastic that contains recycled materials into a different container which they will be able to sell later.

Before I got pregnant I could still do some earth shovelling. So every time I want to throw away organic waste such as food waste or surplus onion skins or eggshell and so on, I would shovel in the backyard and bury the organic waste. In my opinion, it is one of my ways to reduce waste disposal at the individual level.

Now with advances in technology, waste can be used as a source of electrical energy (Waste to Enery or WTE). Malaysia should have already started using this method for more efficient waste management. Singapore for example has started using WTE. One of the by-product from WTE technology is ash. The ash can be used to build an island and is expected in 2029 Singapore will own a new island of 350 hectares.

Let us manage waste better. Let us train ourselves and the next generations to recycle for the good of the future.

Practical Islam Tip #1: If you have a backyard, install a bird feeder. The Prophet (pbuh) informed us in an authentic narration that there is reward in feeding any animal.

Can you imagine that on the Day of Judgment, birds or squirrels might be the reason for your forgiveness

Practical Islam Tip #2: Whenever you are outside, make it a point for yourself to always pick up a piece of trash and dispose of it properly. The Prophet (pbuh) informed us in an authentic narration that a man had entered Paradise because he had removed a harmful object from the road.

Can you imagine that on the Day of Judgment a piece of trash might be the reason for your forgiveness?
